Root Chakra Healing and the Atonement with the Father

root chakra healingRoot chakra healing includes our relationship to security.  One key issue around security for many people is the issue of money.  The root chakra is, however, related to abundance.  Abundance, as I have written before in this blog, is the way in which the individual is in alignment with and allows the life force to flow and freely express through them as it is intended.  Abundance is not simply an issue about money and wealth.  One might be extremely wealthy but from an energetic point of view they could be the living dead.

I have issues around money.  Some of my more materiality focused friends have asked me if I have ever taken a vow of poverty.  In a very real sense part of me did and finds it hard to let go.  My Reiki master tells me that in relation to this issue I should cut the ties but not the love.  I have always resisted that advice and now at the age of sixty one years I am getting ready to do what I have resisted.  This willingness to let go has been prompted by a dream I had last night.  In this dream I am running with another man.  We are running in a wide open field.  He is supporting me.  He lets me go and says that I must now run on my own.  This dream man is a kind of mentor.

I have root chakra  issues I need healing around the issue of my father and money.  The longer I live the more loving of him I become and my focus on what we had together is now more on gratitude rather than on loss.  I realise that in many ways I am very like him.  I used not to want to be anything like him.  Now I appreciate who and what he was and the best of who he was.  In some way that begins to mirror how I feel about myself.

I have an image that I keep in my mind that connects me to my father and my relationship to money.  This is an image that I do not want to let go off.  It is one image that when I recollect it connects me to my love for him.  Even as I remember this recollection now a tear comes to my eye.  My father was a working class man from the tough side of Liverpool in England.  He fought for the rights of the working man.  In his heart, however, he was an artist but he was forced to work at a job that was essentially soul destroying.  He made money wherever he could and worked all the hours that he could in order to make ends meet.  I never remember us, as a family ever going without except that I always remember going without the love I longed for him to express to me but never did.  He was not a demonstrative kind of man.  In that sense he and I are not alike.

My remembered image of my father takes place late one night.  I had come down from my bedroom to use the bathroom.  There was a light on in the living room and I look in.  My father sat at a desk counting money.  He was counting union dues from the men whose rights he upheld as their union representative at the place he worked at for most of his life.  I remember most of all that he looked tired and sad.  I remember too that I wanted most of all to take away that tiredness and sadness because of my intense love for him.  He wasn’t aware of my watching him.  I didn’t disturb him but left to go back upstairs to bed.

root chakra healing and dreamsThat memory connects me to him still, and in healing the root chakra and the sense of abundance, I have begun to let it go.  I have, as my Reiki master advises cut the ties but not the love.  This image is one connected to working in the dark late at night.  It is an image of counting little sums of money that becomes a symbol of the men who, in a very real sense, are fighting for their souls.  My father becomes a kind of guardian of that energy.  I don’t want to let that go of this image of him but in a sense it keeps me tied into a relationship to money that does not serve what I am here to serve.

Like my father I am a union man.  I am a writer who invites the ultimate union.  I do not fight for this union.  I invite surrender rather than fight.  I pay my union dues through the spiritual practices that are part of my real work in the world.  I work in the dark out of choice.  I choose to work in the shadow lands of the human mind.  I choose to do and practice dreamwork.  I work to align the invitations from my dream life into the life that I express in this everyday world of form

Root chakra healing is about healing your sense of security.  Money and security are deeply related.  As a child my images around money are ones about struggle, doing work you hate, not earning your livelihood by giving up what you would love to do.  It includes images of counting pittances that allow a struggle for the rights of the working man to go on.  All of these images are a representation of my father doing his best with the situation that he was presented with.  There are many such fathers in the world who are doing their best.

The question for me is how do I run on as the image of the dream invites me to do.  It invites me to run into the wide open field.  In this regard I am reminded of a poem that invites union within a field.  It is by my beloved Rumi.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
doesn’t make any sense.

—Rumi

The answer is that I let go the connection to the images of struggling in the dark with too little light.  In order for root chakra healing to take place I let go the images of struggle but not the love that is and was inherent within that struggle.  I change the image to one of honouring what was given by my father even if it wasn’t given in the way I most wanted.  My father was a provider.  He wasn’t a lover.  He was too wounded by the blight of his own fathers alcoholism and the times through which he lived.  Although in a way I see how he, in his own ay, late into the night, worried and sorrowful, risked for Love in ways I am privileged not to have to do.

root chakra healing and technologyAtonement with the father is root chakra work.  It is the work of healing the roots of your family dynamic that will in all likelihood impact you throughout all of your life.  I am beginning to open up to a real sense of abundance.  I have learned new skills that I intend to take into the marketplace.  I have learned new skills that I will take into my community.  My community is everyone who reads this blog and all the various healers who are connected to each other through an invisible thread of intention.

I am intending to bring a union of the masculine and the feminine into the world of healing in the way I seem most graced to be able to do.  This involves the work of teaching technological skills to healers so that they can promote their work to the world and in the process learn to integrate the power of the masculine as represented by the Goddess Techne with the power and grace of the Divine Feminine.  This is my work.  It is soul work.  It is work that I am able to do and in doing it I am able to honour the sacrifice that my father made on my behalf and others so that we might be more empowered to follow the life we love.  My father eventually got to do the soul work his heart longed for.  He founded an art club that is still in existence long after his death.

The Way of the Chakras and Personal Development

personal development and chakra balancing

Persona – The Mask

Personal Development – the development of the persona, the mask, the separate sense of self – involves the balancing of the first three chakras

  1. The Root Chakra
  2. The Sacral Chakra
  3. The Solar Plexis Chakra

This is the first triad of chakras that are concerned with personal development and the integrity of the individual.  The second triad of chakras is concerned not so much with development but the allowing of revelation.

One allows the revelation of the impersonal or the universal.

  1. The Crown Chakra
  2. The Brow Chakra
  3. The Throat Chakra

These two triads one moving upward, which denotes the masculine and the other moving downwards denoting the movement of feminine energy are connected by the middle chakra -

                    The Heart Chakra

When this process of personal development and beyond is complete then we have the integration of two triangles, which makes the sacred symbol of the star.  This is a symbol of sacred unity – the unity of the personal with the universal within you.  This is the Way of the Chakras.  It is a complete physical, mental, emotional and spiritual integration.  It leads to a sense of connection beyond the limitation of the separate sense of self, which is the cause of suffering in this time/space dimension.

It is the fullest expression of what is potential within you.  It provides an outline that promotes a total sense of well being in all areas of your life and the life beyond the limitation of the person you think yourself to be.  The Way of the Chakras develops the personality in the following way.

  1. Physical Well Being – I Am
  2. Emotional Well Being – I Feel
  3. Mental Well Being – I Think

This is a process of integrity.  It begins in the body.  This is not simply a linear process, meaning that you move 1, 2, 3 in a straight line.  Well being in the body will lead to a greater emotional and mental well being.  In this process you are using your will, the power of intention – to integrate your physical, emotion and mental energies.  This is needed in order to be able to surrender the will you have developed to that which is universal.

It is only those who have strength of will that can allow themselves to allow the process to take them higher.  This process moves through the heart.  The individual will is developed to the point where they begin to feel the pull of the universal within them.  Then the individual will is being invited to merge with the will of the Divine.  This is the true desire of the heart and the purpose of life on this planet.

Spiritual Education and the Way of the Chakra's

The Infant Samuel

This seven stage outline is the true spiritual education.  It is the education that one should at least be made aware of even if you choose not to follow this particular way.  It is a map that you can follow that leads to the revelation of why you are born.  While this revelation needs to be direct it is more likely to be revealed to the individual whose mind is open to the invitation.

The experience of life lived from the opening of the heart chakra is in many ways the opening to the life of the miraculous.  Most people on this planet are not living from this dynamic.  By that I mean that they are not able to simply abide within the heart by an act of will.  At best they are able to glimpse the state of heart consciousness but get pulled out of it by habitual attachment to lower levels of consciousness where they, for the most part, live.

Without at least a glimpse of this heart state, the desires of the heart will not be known as a direct experience and your life will be driven by ego desires, which are for the  most part determined by the desires of the collective and, especially today, by media and commercial interests.  This complete map of the human journey is really an experienced journey.  It requires that you at the very least know the general direction and outline of the territory.  This is a glorious journey because that in a very real sense is the dynamic you end up being the revelation.

My personal recommendation is that you at least learn the outline of the journey.  I also add one proviso.  Always remember that the journey begins in the body, the root chakra, and that you are to remember that to keep your feet always on the ground.  Paradoxically speaking, this is the only way to fly.  Whatever map you choose to follow in relation to what I call the Way of the Chakra’s, be it a book, a course, with a teacher, do not simple make this spiritual education process simple more information.  This Way of the Chakra’s  is 99% practice and 1% information.  Don’t cling to the words but make yourself available to the knowing beyond words.  This is the most practical of ways to live life for all your life.

Eternity Awaits You

There is a bonus in living this way.  You expand in many ways.  It is a journey into seeing beyond.  You cannot yet know what  that feels like.  The breakthrough experience happens and you are revealed to be more than you ever thought you would imagine.  The Way of the Chakras will, should you choose to venture on the Way reveal to you something beyond any worth.  It is a paradox because it is not a thing that you get.  It is the revelation of who you already are but not awake to.  The poet R. S. Thomas says this wonderfully well in his poem The Bright Field.

The Bright Field

I have seen the sun break through
to illuminate a small field
for a while, and gone my way
and forgotten it. But that was the pearl
of great price, the one field that had
treasure in it. I realize now
that I must give all that I have
to possess it. Life is not hurrying
on to a receding future, nor hankering after
an imagined past. It is the turning
aside like Moses to the miracle
of the lit bush, to a brightness
that seemed as transitory as your youth
once, but is the eternity that awaits you.

~ R. S. Thomas ~

(Another from the wonderful anthology,
Soul Food: Nourishing Poems for Starved Minds,
ed. by Neil Astley and Pamela Robertson-Pearce)

Don’t let your life simply be a hurry into a receding future without real purpose and meaning.  This purpose and meaning is only recreated from the heart centre – the bright field.  It is, as the modern mystic Guy Finley has so eloquently said

Your purpose is to allow Love to use you for its purpose

This can only happen if you are able to surrender your will to the Universal Will.  This is, in essence, the one love choice.  It is, in a very real sense, the choice between life and death.  The Way of the Chakras ultimately leads you to the direct knowing, to the eternal birthless/deathless revelation that you are.  My invitation through this blog is to say to you -

At least educate yourself to this glorious invitation.

You can take the first step.  You can even, if you doubt the possibility, take the first step.  This is a first step into the knowing of your full potential.  As one proverb invites

Chakra Balancing and Danger of Meditation

chakra balancing and meditationIn a recent comment on this blog I was asked if there is a difference between chakra balancing and meditation?  Let me say at the outset that I am neither an expert in meditation nor am I an expert in chakra balancing.  However, I am a kind of expert with regard to both meditation and chakra balancing based upon my own spiritual journey.  What I share in this article is from my own personal experience.

There are many forms of meditation.  The benefits of meditation are vast and have been scientifically proven. I cannot recommend some form of meditation highly enough. There is, however, a danger in meditation. I base my caution upon my own practise when I was made aware of such a danger by a Buddhist teacher who came to teach meditation in the West.  The danger is with the understanding of  ‘detachment.’  I began early on in my life with the practice of meditation Vipassana. This is a very powerful meditation technique and has lead to more experiences of enlightenment than any other.  The man who taught me  this technique was not much older than myself.  He seemed a strange young man.   He was distant and aloof and also terribly thin.  He had a kind of floaty presence which I put down to his being a practiced meditator.

The practice of Vipassana meditation lead me into feeling depressed.  The more I did this meditation practice the more depressed I became.  When I asked my teacher about this he simply said, “Keep practising.” He said nothing more.  The depression didn’t move until I stopped this mediatition practice.  I did not take up a meditation practice until many years later when I met another teacher.  This was a man called Sangarachita who is the founder of the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order.  He was an older man and had given his life to the journey of the spirit.  He had travelled in India after the Second World War and stayed on, eventually becoming a Buddhist monk.  Many years later he returned to the West.  He recorded many talks on meditation and one I listened to, which warned of the dangers of meditation, fascinated me.

In this recording of a lecture on meditation he recalled a phenomena that he discovered when he first returned home to England from India and taught meditation to Westerners.  This was the fact that many of those who engaged with the practice of mediation experienced depression.  He himself could not explain it so he watched those he taught and over time he came to this understanding.   Many people in the West, including myself, come to the practice of meditation to find a sense of greater peace and happiness.

Loving Kindess MeditationI was unhappy because I was out of touch with my feelings. What theVipassina technique taught Westerners to do was to detach from feelings from which they were already extremely detached.  In the words of the Irish writer James Joyce, “they lived some way from their body” and this lead to depression.  I have attended  various schools of meditation that produce individuals who are disembodied and floaty because they practice detachment from detachment.  None of these people would agree with any of what I write here.  The alternative to the practice of witnessing phenomena that arises in the mind is the warm meditation practice of the Meta Behavana.

This is the practice of Loving Kindness.  One is a ‘cool’ practice and the other is a ‘warm’ practice.  So what is the difference between meditation and chakra balancing?   The answer is one that is given from my own personal experience.  I use this chakra balancing technique because it is a full body technique.  It is a practice of full embodiment and not simply a practice of silent witnessing.  One can meditate on the light of a candle but be unaware of the body except that it is restless or aches in some way.  This does not mean that you are able in the words of the poet Mary Oliver to

let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

The practice of chakra balancing is aligned with stages of personal and spiritual growth.  It is a practice that invites the integrity of the personality through alignment of the conscious mind with the unconscious mind.  This brings personal power (3rd chakra) and leads to the alignment of the will with Divine will and which in turn leads to what is called enlightenment.  The way of enlightenment, as the modern mystic Ekhart Tolle has eloquently stated, is “through body and not beyond body.”  In this blog site I emphasis embodiment and the love of the body  This is not love of a body image but love of the body as an experience of aliveness and love of the form through which life is able to express through you in a very unique way.

Meditation will give you great benefits but it may not invite a love of the body. This, paradoxically, leads you to that which is within and also beyond the body.  I have met with many meditators with body hatred and they use meditation as a form of distancing themselves from the body.  Chakra balancing on the other hand is body focused.  It is never NOT body focussed.  It begins its focus with the fact that you are a body and that the body is the beginning point and the foundation into higher states of consciousness.  It invites the love of the body which, I add, is not a love of a body image but the free flow of energy within the body that is the dance of life.  You see this free flow in the play of little children.

When you are grounded in the body you are able to move higher.  You move into the 2nd chakra, which is the movement into the unconscious.  This is the area of relationship, the area of feelings and in particular those feelings that one tends to repress.  It is the area of relationship and the area of sexuality and the area of opposition.  In this process one does not deny their feelings but learns to integrate such feelings into the fullness of an integral personality.  This is one of the first steps that one takes in learning to balance the chakras.

There are seven chakras.  The first three involve personal integration of body, emotions and will.  The fourth is the bridge between the personal and the impersonal of the Divine.  The last three are the surrendering of the personal will to Divine will.  All of these stages are best entered in full embodiment until you live the paradox that you are and you are not.

I leave you with what I think is an important quote on this topic from the modern master Ekhart Tolle from his book The Power of the Now.

The fact is that no one has ever become enlightened through denying or fighting the body or through and out-of-the-body experience.  Although such an experience can be fascinating and can give you a glimpse of the state of libreation from the material form, in th end you will always return to the body, where the essential work of transformation takes place.  Transformation is through the body, not away from it.  This is why no true master has ever adocated fighting or leaving the body, although their mind-based followers often have.

Here is a video showing Eckhart Tolle. It is slow to begin with. Like myself, those of you who impatient might find they want it to move along more quickly. Simply notice this impatience. It is in fact an interesting exercise in awareness. The beginning of this video is interesting from the point of view of this post in that Echkhart Tolle immediately introduces you to the importance of being aware of the body and breathing. If you take nothing more away from watching this video then take this body awareness technique as a foundational techique for chakra balancing and especially a technique for 1st chakra balancing.

Root Chakra Healing – Real Embodiment

spiritual growth
I write about the various maps and stages of personal and spiritual growth.  For many, the key reason for such an interest in personal and spiritual growth is, for reason of success, the reason of health or for the reason of transcendence.  Spiritual growth, I believe is, for the most part more easily developed if you are physically, emotionally and mentally integrated.  This process of integration is the work connected to the development of the personality.  It also includes the work that is to be done in  aligning the energy centres in the body known as the  Chakras.

The integration of the personality is concerned with the first three chakras.  These are

Root Chakra – I am.
Sacral Chakra – I feel.
Solar Plexus Chakra – I can.

The flowering of human potential begins in the body.  One has to be able to say, “I am.”  One has to be able to affirm their existence on this plane as an embodied being.  You are able to say, “I am of the earth and I have my feet on the ground.”  Full embodiment is the first spiritual task on this journey called life.  There are many people, and many religious institutions, that have promoted and are still promoting a form of body hatred.

Many individuals have given over their authority in matters of spiritual growth to institutions that have taught them in one way or another that they are, “Prey to the sins of the flesh.”  In this way sensitivity, sensuality and especially sexuality are considered resistances to the higher realms of the mind and the spirit.  Women’s sexuality and especially the sexuality of gay people throughout most of history has been demonised in some way or another.  Throughout the history of the world women and their bodies have been seen as somehow unclean.  Our modern form of body hatred is the promotion of the ideal shape that fills the pages of so many magazines for men and women.

This promotion of the ideal body tends to also promote the disease called narcissism.  Narcissism is so common in our culture that to be non-narcisstic is seen as being abnormal.  Narcissism is a form of ego implosion.  It is where one is so concerned with one’s self image that the image becomes the meaning of one’s life.  The result is, that over time, there is nothing left except the image that has no foundation within the true Self.  Narcissism, and the increasing development of narcissism through television and the media,  is a major disease of the 21st Century.  Its most damaging effects are seen in the increasing incidence of eating disorders and obesity.

In writing about personal and spiritual growth I invite a path to fulfilment.  This path of fulfilment means that you take authority for the maintenance of your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.  You do this as an integral practice and you do this each and everyday.  Each and everyday you engage with several activities that promote integral health at personal and transpersonal levels.  The foundation of this practice routine begins with paying attention to the needs of the body.  Many of us lead a very sedentary life.  We eat food on the go.  We rarely grow our own food.  We might tend to microwave instant meals.  I have a family member, who when she visits our cottage, will say, “Oh yeh, I forgot you cook your food.”

spiritual growth and trancendence

I write this blog for a certain kind of individual.  This is the individual who is interested in real spiritual growth.  Many individuals who I have met are interested in spiritual growth from a wish for transcendence.  They tend to be attracted, as I was attracted, to groups that invite them into higher states of consciousness.

Such individuals already have a desire to transcend their sense of separateness of the body.  This wish for transcendence  has much to do with the pain of their past emotional experience.  Many of these well intentioned individuals,  who are already disassociated to some extent from their bodies and their emotions, then begin using various spiritual techniques that further disassociate them from their bodies and feelings.

I have personally met with students of wisdom teachers who are not fully there when you meet with them.  They kind of float around and are so detached, both physically and emotionally,  that the suffering of others does not impact them.  They will assure you that detachment is a key part of spiritual growth.  While detachment is a key aspect of spiritual growth being detached from your emotional body is not real detachment.  This kind of emotional detachment tends to be a result of the avoidance of an earlier stage of spiritual growth that involves the integration of opposites.

There are those who are so attached to their practice of detachment that all they are focused on is their personal pursuit of bliss.  Should any one of them attain to such a state of bliss it will not be from an embodied state but from a disembodied state.  They will in all likelihood become like Icarus who flew to close to the sun on wings of feathers and wax that they melted and he fell to earth.  They will not be able to stand the heat of the sun, which represents the higher state of consciousness, because they have not at each stage of the journey kept their feet on the ground.

The teachings of the sins of the flesh from a spiritual growth point of view causes, and has caused, untold suffering.  The more modern teaching of the narcisstic image of the flesh as promoted by the media also causes untold suffering.  There is another way. This way is beautifully invited in the lines from a Mary Oliver poem.

Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.

The key line here is “You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.”  This is the way of sensitivity, sensuality and sexuality.  It is not the way of narcissism and the cultivation of an image that will eventually mean that at some stage along the spiritual journey you fall to earth.  Sensitivity in the body means that you discover how sensational you are and are intended to be.  This is why I invite you to practice awareness of the body as a key foundational practice for spiritual growth.

This is ground work.  This work is foundational to spiritual growth.  This is the work of the 1st Chakra.  Allied to this body awareness is the awareness of the breath.  Most resistance to personal and spiritual growth is through a breath that is being held in subtle and not so subtle ways.  This holding of the breath leads to what has been termed body armouring.  In this way the individual armours themselves against feelings that are too painful to acknowledge.

The first step along the spiritual journey is the learning of embodiment.  The spiritual journey is not about transcending the body but transforming your awareness of the illusory sense of separateness that embodiment creates.  You don’t do this by hating the body but loving it.  Love is the energy that transforms and transcends all along the way.  This experience of love is not a disembodied experience where one becomes emotionally detached from the suffering of others and from ones own suffering.

You will not move to the higher stages of spiritual growth by being a narcissist but in developing a sensitivity to the life force that dances the form of the body that you are.  You have to learn how to trust this process.  You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.  This is true self loving and not the love of the image that you wish to promote.   The key body practices that will help keep your feet on the ground and that I recommend as some part of your daily spiritual practice are either Yoga, Tia Chi, Pilates, and when and if you are able, gardening.

Chakra Balancing and Healing and the Practice of Patience

chakra balancing and healingOne of the key aspects of chakra balancing and healing is that aspect of patience.  Our modern culture invites impatience.  It invites the idea that you are entitled to have whatever you desire in an instant.  This is really the power of the ego run riot.  There are ways of having what you wish to have instantaneously.  One way is to have enough resources and the other is to have enough consciousness.  Chakra balancing and healing is the way of developing awareness of higher states of consciousness.  This is not an instant quick fix solution.  You are working with subtle energies of intention and allowing.  The work with chakra healing is an art.  it is also a practice.  It is a form of regular workout but a workout that takes place in the subtle body.  Like any physical work out it is best done regularly and with a focused attention to build up slowly.  If one were doing weight training one doesn’t immediately begin with weights that strain the physical capacity of the person attempting to lift weight that are beyond their present capability.

Because the practice is a subtle practice it is best to bring your awareness of this practice into form.  I do this by means of journaling.  I keep a kind of dairy which records the impressions that I experience during the guided meditation that I do twice daily.  This record includes a record of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual impressions.  I also make a record of my dreams which are a representation of the subtle.  In this way you are physically honouring the process of healing that you are making your intention.

When you begin to work with chakra balancing and healing you should be aware that you will begin to release unconscious blocks that stand in the way of such healing.  These can be long standing.  This is why patience, and a kind of infinite patience, is required when one works with chakra balancing and healing.  Along with such patience practice kindness and compassion to those aspects of yourself that are wishing to be made whole.  Beware of chakra healing and balancing products that promise you instant and miraculous results.  If miraculous results happen it means that you were ready to receive such miraculous results.  Pay attention to what is in the moment rather than always focusing your attention to some wished for result in the immediate future.  This is very tempting to do when we are feeling unwell and when the result is not attained one then assumes the process does not work.  Don’t beat yourself up because the results you want aren’t instantaneous.  Trusting the process is required and that process is unique to you.

Chakra balancing and healing is like any other form of spiritual and personal development practice such as meditation, prayer or Yoga.  In the beginning there is lots of distraction.  You come into contact with the reality of your mind which in various spiritual traditions is referred to as monkey mind.   In the beginning of many spiritual practices it isn’t so much that you learn to do the process in the right way but that you learn to stay focused rather than distracted.  With chakra balancing and healing this is why it helps to have a guided meditation that you feel connected to.  Choose a guided meditation that attracts you until the time comes when you can practice without the aid of such a guided meditation.

chakra balancing and healingDistraction is the major dysfunction of our age.  We are distracted by distraction.  Our major inability is our inability to focus and to concentrate on one thing.  Concentration is needed in order that it move deeper into contemplation.  Contemplation involves the direct awareness of higher states of consciousness that invite true healing and wholeness.

Chakra balancing and chakra healing is not simply a one off practice were you do it once or twice and then say, “I tried that but it didn’t work.”  Healing is an art.  Like any art one needs to give one’s art intention, attention and the time it needs.  Chakra balancing and healing, like any healing, is an art.  It is a very subtle art and requires a lot of patience.

Once you have identified with it, and begin to feel it, then favor the subtle side of your life.  Begin to consciously value this level of awareness.  What you value will tend to grow.  What you are attracted to will grow provided that you do not keep yourself distracted by distraction.  If you favour the grosser levels of awareness then the world will reflect this focus back to you.  Subtle experience is quiet and harmonious.  This is where you begin to feel real balance and the alignment of your energy with the flow of life through the subtle body.

1st Chakra Balancing – The Foundation for the Integrated Life

chakra balancining

One of my abiding interests, and one which I have returned to in a unique kind of way, is the path of chakra healing.  This path is a complete map of human and spiritual development.  This path of spiritual growth brings balance to ones life through the integration of

  • Mind Body and Spirit
  • Sacred Geometry
  • Sacred Sounds
  • Colour Therapy
  • Numerology and
  • Levels of Consciousness.

The beginning of this process of integration starts with what is called the Root Chakra or the Muladhara chakra.  This is where we all begin.  We are all embodied in form on this planet of polar opposites.  This is our foundation in this world.  The body is the temple of the spirit and in order to progress to the higher stages of personal and spiritual development one must always remain aware that the body is to be honoured in the process of spiritual growth.  Let me outline below the map that I will refer to as the Way of the Chakras.  This is the way that brings chakra balance and chakra healing.  This is a very broad idea outlined in words.   This Way of the Chakras and way of chakra healing involves a lifetime and more spiritual of education.  This is true spiritual education that invites the revelation of the Divine within human form.

There are seven main chakras.  For each of these I will give the name by which it is identified in the West and I will also give the Sanskrit name by which the relevant chakra is identified by in the East.  This Chakra Healing – a path of integration – will be outlined over several blog posts.  The seven chakra system is outlined below.

  1. The Root Chakra – Muladhara Chakra.
  2. The Sacral Chakra – Polarity Chakra or Svadhistana Chakra.
  3. The Solar Plexus Chakra – Manipua Chakra.
  4. The Heart Chakra – Anahata Chakra.
  5. The Throat Chakra – Vishuddi Chakra.
  6. The Third Eye Chakra – Ajna Chakra.
  7. The Crown Chakra – Sahasrara Chakra.

Very broadly speaking the first three chakras are concerned with the integration of the human personality.  The last three chakras are concerned with the unfolding of the Divine within human form.  The middle chakra – the heart chakra – is the bridge that connects the human personality with the universal.  This is the real meaning and the intended invitation from the practice of Yoga.  The word Yoga means to yoke – meaning to join.  This joining is a paradoxical joining of the human with the Divine which in reality has never been separate.  The movement of the energy through these centres (chakras) is a process that has been referred to as Kundalini awakening.  It is not a practice that one should begin without a foundational understanding of the process involved and the risks involved.  You cannot force your way into Heaven or into higher states of personal and spiritual development without proper preparation.  To try to do so can, and has, lead to the damage of ones nervous system.  In the development of the Way of the Chakras less equals more.

Chakra Balancing begins with the Root Chakra

Let us begin to examine this path of spiritual growth.  We begin with

The Root Chakra – Muladhara

In the root chakra (Muladhara chakra) all is potential.  It represents the experience of our every day life.  It is the foundation of our earthly experience.  It is our experience of being a body living within the dimension of time and space.  At the beginning of our lives our spiritual endeavour is to connect to the body and be well informed within the true meaning of that word.  It is our work to become grounded in our physicality.  From a psychological point of view the root chakra is where the Self and everything that is Divine within us is asleep.  We are in a very real sense the Sleeping Beauty within.  Certain chakras have an element connected to them.  The element connected to the root chakra (Muladhara chakra) is the earth.  It represents the connection to form, to the body and to the need to have our feet firmly on the ground.

The person with a healthy root chakra might well live life from the following perspective.  They are able to say no and mean it without feeling this as a threat to who they are.  They can affirm their “I am.” They appreciate their body and give it good food, proper rest and are able to sense what it needs when it needs it.  They are not obsessive about their body image and neither do they have issues around food such as under eating or over eating.  The person who has a balanced root chakra is able to manifest into form what it is they they desire to create in the world.

For a person with a balanced root chakra the world they live is seen and felt, for the most part, to be a place of safety.  They have been fortunate to be grounded in a warm and loving environment where their needs were met and their unfolding was encouraged in unique ways.  Many of us do not experience the world in such a way and we can so easily be thrown off balance.  We can lose our job, we can lose a key relationship.  We can experience a crisis in our health.  To support the expansion of our consciousness and to move into higher states of spiritual growth we need to work hard to balance and maintain the balance of the root chakra (Muladhara Chakra).

A person with a poorly functioning rook chakra might well live in the realm of their imagination and take little or no care for the health of the body.  They take little or no exercise, live mostly in their heads, eat food that has no real life force within it and are not in any way engaged with the earth.  This is, for the most part, the experience of the majority of the population of the Western world with its epidemic of obesity and disease associated with body image.  It is a form of unconscious body hatred and is evidenced by a form of neglect of the body and in extreme cases results in taking the life of the body.  A person with an unbalanced root chakra is an individual who’s sense of who they are is weak.  They have difficulty in asserting the essence of the root chakra in the statement “I am.”

The way to begin to balance the root chakra is to establish a program of regular exercise, healthy eating, development of the senses and a proper sleep routine.  It also helps tremendously to try and create a sense of safety within at last one area of your life.  This is a place where, in a very real sense one can go to ground.  One very simply and powerful way to begin is to do the practice that I myself do twice each day.  I do this practice in the morning before I get up and once in the evening before I go to sleep.  This is a simply yoga practice that has taken me into states of consciousness far beyond those of the everyday world.  This is the practice called The Corpse pose.

Although it seems simple Savasana is a pose that has many benefits.  Combine this pose with a guided meditation on chakra balancing and you begin to ground yourself within a real sense of “I am.”  There is no requirement for you to become an advanced practitioner of Yoga.  The problem for many people with this pose is the problem of simplicity.  They want something more complex and more demanding.  They feel that if it doesn’t involve hard work then there are no benefits.  In the area of chakra balancing the tendency is that less is more.

You might learn your own chakra balancing guided meditation.  However, if you have not done this practice before it might be best to acquire a guided meditation that you feel is suitable to your individual needs.  Make this discovery of this guided meditation part of your personal development process.  Take the opportunity to explore what works and what does not work for you rather than be told what might work for you.  A guided meditation on chakra healing might not suit you for a number of reasons.  The person’s voice for one thing might not feel warm enough.  The words spoken might not be words that give you a sense of safety and an invitation to let go.  The chakra meditation might include music when all you want is the sound of silence accompanied by the human voice.  Try a number of guided chakra balancing meditations.  Give each one enough time and remember that this is a slow and a subtle process.  Remember too that sometimes, even often, things often get worse before they get better.  Your awareness is expanding.  What you were once resisting is now arising and being made conscious and is arising to be made whole and to be healed.

Another grounding exercise is journaling.  It is the practice of honouring and authorising your journey of individualisation.  To being with this practice may not be terribly inspiring but what is important is the intention and the action arising from such intention.  You are not required to be an expert in journaling or writing.  You are only required to be intent on honouring the revelation you are here to be and are here to be in order to bless the world.

Everyone needs to develop a strong root chakra.  it is the foundation on which we are then able to move into the higher stages of personal and spiritual development.  A simple way to being is with the practice of Savasana while listening to a guided meditation that you decide suits you best.  Then you can begin to ground the experience by journaling about it and into his way authorise your personal and spiritual development in the unique way it is intended.  Later this journal can be a way of reflecting on various aspects of your life in relation to exercise, diet and sleep.  Later still you can include reflections on your dreams which can then lead to your living the life of your dreams. There are many ways to get grounded.  Find one that works for you and try to stay with it for some time.  This helps develop commitment and patience.  The journey into higher and more refined states of personal and spiritual growth require these two essentials.  The third essential is practice.  This is the beginning of the ground work that leads to a balanced root chakra (Muladhara chakra).
