Spiritual Direction – 5 Steps along the Path
I am on a spiritual journey. The purpose of this is to realise the fullness of who I am and why I am. I write on the topic of spiritual direction for one primary reason. This is simply to share the journey that I am on and in doing so share directions for those who would take their own journey and to highlight certain signposts along the way. Let me say at the beginning of this article that I have no affiliation with any religious organisation. I am not out to convert you to some hierarchical organisation that tells you that it knows the one way. You are a unique movement of Love in form and you have within you the map that might be called the journey of the soul.
In my journey of spiritual development and beyond I have met with many sincere seekers and a number of false prophets along the way. In this process of unfolding the inspired within I continue to find such false prophets on both the world wide web and outside of the web. It is my intention, therefore, to share with you some aspects of spiritual direction which you can use no matter what your religious persuasion is. I will be writing other articles on spiritual direction with a focus on the power of storytelling and also including reflections from my joy of poetry. So bookmark this blog so that you are able to return to it when you wish.
Let me begin with my approach to spiritual direction. This outline is not just for beginners but for those who have walked the path for some time. So let me begin with outlining some aspects of what spiritual direction involves. These are not the only aspects of spiritual direction but I think they are foundational to the journey of the soul and the realisation and revelation of the Divine within you.
1. Spiritual Direction arises from Within
The spiritual journey begins in earnest when you take direction from the wisdom voice within. Great spiritual guidance always honours the wisdom voice from within and focuses you on learning to trust this guidance. The wisdom of the bible advises that Heaven lies within. This is within your awareness. It isn’t inside the body but can be felt within the body. The focus on the outer world tends to be the focus of the ego in service to its own sense of separateness. The ego tries to make some kind of meaning out of this experience of feeling separate. Most everyone feels this sense of being separate as their reality. Turning within is the first step in knowing sacred unity and the way of living the wild and precious life.
2. Spiritual Direction requires Discipline, Commitment and Practice
This is a kind of holy trinity. The direction that your spiritual and inspired life will travel will depend on a daily commitment to a disciplined spiritual practice. This isn’t something that you simply do when you feel like doing it and neither should it become a core. It is the practice of learning to align your will with the will of the Divine as it speaks uniquely through you. The journey into the wild and precious and inspired life is not for those who are lukewarm. You need to make a real commitment to unfolding the unique way in which creation expresses through you. This can begin slowly at first and build to become the foundation for living your wild and precious life.
3. Spiritual Direction is as much about doubt as it is about Faith
I see many people who put their faith in holy books and in holy teachers of all kinds. This is like clinging to the sign post and never stepping out on the journey of the wild and precious life. There are false prophets who assure you that you do not know the way or that their way is the only way. They will assure you, as they have assured me and many like me, that you or I are not worthy of having the realisation that is our birthright. The journey of the spirit will take you into times of doubt and certainly into periods of resistance. You will begin to question beliefs that you once held too. This is often a period before transformation. It is where you have spiritual experience as revelation rather than spiritual instruction as simply more information.
4. Spiritual Direction is not about Group Consciousness
You are a unique expression of Love in form. You are also a social animal. You get support in many ways by belonging to different groups. This is part of growing up. However, you can spend a lot of time identified with the ego of a spiritual group who will tie you too their way of thinking. In that way you will stay clinging to the signpost of the group authority. All sincere spiritual seekers have to come to the point of taking their own authority on trust and following the guidance from the still small voice within. This is part of the process. You can enjoy being part of a spiritual group but beware of the time when you are advised how you should move forward. Especially beware of anyone who tells you that there are some secret teaching that they are able to give to you.
5. Spiritual Direction is forever changing.
The spiritual journey is not simply a linear journey. It is a spiral journey that ascends and descends. It ascends and descends at higher and higher levels of expanded awareness. It is a journey that is a paradox. You journey in order to experience the coming home to the placeless place that you never left and can never leave. This spiralling upward and downward involves periods of doubt and resistance because this is a journey of birth/death/rebirth in psychological and spiritual terms. The ego wishes that life remain within a well established grove while the soul longs for and inspires union with the Oneness of Creation.
The above is this storytellers guide to beginning the journey of living your wild and precious life. It is a short outline of what you need to know before you make the commitment to this never ending journey into Love. It begins with a foundational attitude of trust in the eternal movement of Creation through you. It is built on the rock of trust in that process of becoming the unique expression of Love in form that you are and are here to give to the world.
Spiritual direction or spiritual coaching can be summed up in one word. This is the word “trust.” It is the same word used as faith. This is not faith in a series of creeds but faith in the still small voice within. If you trust that still small voice within then you can say to the mountain of doubt, “Move,” and the mountain of doubt will move. Spiritual development isn’t something you add to yourself. It is the revealing of who you are as the movement of Love in form. It is not more information but less. It is not more study of some holy book but the revelation of the holy book within yourself.
I am not against the study of holy books but if you are going to make any book a holy book make sure you do not simply read it in a literal way. I meet with people who have studied holy books for most of their lives and they are from an emotional and psychological standpoint not terribly integrated. They can quote you chapter and verse of their holy book but when you ask them what they know of its inspired teachings from direct experience they do not know how to answer. They know the words but they are not the words revealed.
The journey of the spirit begins with turning inward with trust in the way the Word lives in and through you. This is not a Word that is a representation of language. It isn’t a Greek word or an Italian word. It is the unique way in which the universal vibration moves through you. It is the way in which the Universal song is sung through you. You are a human meaning that you are hu – the sound of God in form or to put it another way the sound of Love in form. This is what is means to be made in the image of God – the image of Love.
Look for spiritual direction or spiritual coaching from someone who will turn you around and get you to build trust in the way that life moves through you. Look for someone who trusts this movement within themselves. If they tie you to their way of thinking or to a dogma or a mantra telling you that they know better than you do then find another. If you are looking for spiritual direction or spiritual coaching you might be experiencing loss of faith. You will feel vulnerable. You may be filled with doubt and low self worth. This still need you to be discriminating. This period can be the darkness before the dawn but you need to learn how to trust the darkness. You need to give the darkness time to reveal the light. There are groups that prey on this time of vulnerability especially in the lives of the young.
The journey of the spirit is a wondrous journey but it is filled with trials. These are not punishments but they are resistances. The secret is to learn to use this resistance to take flight rather than fight against it. This is where a daily spiritual practice builds energy and insight into the process. Its a kind of learning to become an insider and knowing that Love is an inside job. This is your own learning. You are going to fall down. However, it is beter that you learn to fall down and pick yourself up rather than ever learn to dance a dance that was made for another.
The time to begin your practice of discipline and commitment to your unique unfolding is now. Turn within now and trust in the process. Don’t be surprised if nothing happens. Its just that you are not used to spending time in your unique sanctuary. It seems empty. It seems void. This is only because you haven’t yet learned to pay attention. You are the one who, with discipline and commitment, begins to open the eyes of the heart so that you light your own way. This happens slowly and by degree although there are moments when you may well open up to the full majesty and grace of who you are. If this happens then you will know what it is to feel truly blessed and out of this revelation you will be able to bless others.
If you are interested in spiritual instruction without any ties to a given religion based on the foundation of trust in yourself beyond the limitation of your ego I have written a course for this purpose. This is entitled Ready to Radiate. In this course I teach confidence in the process of unfolding the beauty at the deep hearts core of who you are and what you are here to give to the world. This is available at Ready to Radiate. This spiritual training course could be titled “Trust, trust and trust again.” This is a course that builds a foundation that is not dependant on outer circumstances but on your direct knowing of the source of your inspired becoming. This is the birthless/deathless becoming that you are and forever are. This gives you an inner peace and a peace that is beyond the understanding of your logical mind.
You are the one who allows this revelation to happen within by the daily practice and commitment to your chosen spiritual practice. It isn’t your priest, your clergyman or woman, it isn’t your guru who gives you this revelation. It is the essence of who you are that is always giving through you. You have to learn how to get out of the way and become the spiritual understanding you already are. Don’t go selling your soul to a group ego or to anyone who will tell you that they have the way and the one way. The one way is the direct knowing of I AM within you. There are as many ways to this knowing of I AM as creation created in this dimension and beyond. You are unique. You already know how to be that uniqueness. Thrust this being and move from that without your needing to be in control. Then you will live the wild and precious life you are here to give to the world in inspired and in spirited ways.

The Law of Attraction, the Bible and the Power of Story
One of the key aspects of the Law of Attraction is called creative visualisation. It is the practice of imagining. Much of what is imagined within the Law of Attraction process tends to be focused on material gain. This is what this writer and storyteller calls ego desire. It is using the images conjured up from the ego, allied with the universal energy of co-creation, for purposes of self interest rather than on service to the Self. In this blog I want to share with you the importance of the creative imagination and its relation to the power of storytelling. I hope to show you that these stories of old are not just old stories but have real relevance to the way you can invite your life to be the wild and precious life it is intended to be.
In order to do this I will take part of an old Irish story about those called the Tuatha de Danaan – the beautiful people – and also a story from the Old Testament. This is the story of the Flight of the Jews from Egypt. Each of these I will attempt to show can be viewed in different ways. I will be showing you how you can examine these stories so that they become living treasures of possibility within you. In understanding stories in a particular way you open the heart and mind to the wisdom mind within you. This is the mind of beauty and the mind of the prophet within you that guides you across the metaphorical Red Sea to the land of milk and honey where you realise the true beauty and attractiveness of who you are and why you are.
I have of late been having images arrive in my mind while being in a state between sleeping and dreaming. These images are of flowers and also include the image of a virginia creeper that clings the wall of this cottage. This is simply an exercise in paying attention. It arises from the willingness to have the imagination be free to express in its unique way without my need to manipulate it for some idea of personal gain. This is a subtle process. It is a process of faith development. This is not faith in some outer form but the willingness to be guided by what arises from within. “So what,” you might say. How is the image of a flower going to make my life different. That depends on the significance you are willing to assign it. Most of us, including myself, have little patience. We want instant results. We are enticed into ideas of becoming attractors of some get rick quick schemes and instant soul relationships. This is the consumer mind within us that tells us because we want it we can have it and that if we think certain thoughts long enough we will manifest a certain result.
You are unique. How that uniqueness is to flower within you is your responsibility. It is not a flowering from without. It is a flowing from within. The world is created from the inner to the outer and to live a wild and precious life your primary focus needs to be directed inwardly. You need to pay attention to the inner promptings. In the story of the Tuatha de Danaan and their four magical gifts one of the gifts is called the Stone of Destiny. It is told, that whoever, sits on this stone, and hears their name being called from within the stone will become the rightful King or Queen of Ireland.
Many who read the above lines about this old Irish folk tale will take this story literally. They will assume that this is a story of olden times. In their imagination they might visualise a large stone. They might visualise a King or Queen dressed in the fashion of Kings and Queens of a particular period of Irish history. They might hear the stone scream out some old Irish name. Finally, they might imagine that the stone is situated in a land called Ireland. The same process happens when people read metaphysical books such as the Bible or the Holy Koran or the Bagavad Gita. For example, they take the virgin birth to be a literal virgin birth. They take the flight from the Land of Egypt to be the literal flight from the Land of Egypt.
This is why the mystic poet William Blake laments
They read their bible day and night
where they read black I read white.
If you read folk tales, fairy tales, biblical stories from a literal, logical point of view you are reading in the dark. You might have the ability to quote your bible or Gita chapter and verse but this is only from a knowing about basis. All that is known are the words and not the essence. The emotional and transcendent aspect of the symbol are not known and neither is the meaning that is inherent within the symbol known. You might be able to say that “God is Love,” but without knowing that as a direct living experience within these are only words. You could spend a life time in Bible study classes and never touch the transcendent wisdom that is invited to be known by the words of the bible.
When the invitation to stories, whether they be stories in the bible or stories of myth leave out the poetic then the imagination is left out. All that is left is cerebral knowledge. This allows you to think you know and understand the invitation when all that is happening is that you have read the signposts pointing the way. Those who say they know tend to manipulate those who are more honest in their admission when they admit to not knowing. Those who come to be true knower’s of the poetic invitation tend to be suppressed by any hierarchy that they happen to belong to, be it religious, political or social. To enter the real knowing of the transcendent invitation contained in holy books one has to be prepared to enter the cloud of unknowing. This is a state where you are literally speaking out on your own with no support from outside sources.
So how do you go about learning to read a story in a poetic, rather than a literal way, and why is this skill of any importance? The reason why it is important to learn this skill is because it opens the heart and the creative imagination. Without living from the heart and the heart of creative imagination life will be something you tend to know about rather than allow to be the wild and precious gift that is given to you to co-create from. Be aware, however, that there are those, especially those in religious authority, who will warn you against claiming your own authority in matters of spirituality.
These stories of old are not about a long time ago. The Genesis story is not about a long time ago. It is a story about the eternal now. The story of the Jews as being the chosen people leaving Egypt to cross the Red Sea to a land flowing with mild and honey isn’t the story of a tribe leaving captivity to find a better place to live in freedom. It is your story of captivity in slavery to the idea of the separate self. In that sense it is a story of the journey of the flowering of human consciousness and it is your story as part of that eternal process.
The crossing of the Red Sea is the metaphor for crossing the threshold beyond your blood ties with the tribe and entering the waters of your unconscious. The land flowing with milk and honey is the metaphor for your living the wild and precious life beyond your limited identification with the ego (slavery). You have within you the wisdom guide. You have the one within you who is the prophet. This is only available to you should you wish to trust this possibility. You have been taught for most of your life that you should give your authority to someone or something outside yourself. Learning to trust the wisdom voice within – the still small voice within – is the real beginning of the working of the Law of Attraction.
If you doubt that such wisdom exists within you then it will not be available to you. You will do what the collective do. You will remain enslaved to ego desires and be metaphorically speaking enslaved in the land of Egypt and refuse to cross the sea of the unconscious mind into the revelation of your Divinity. This is your at one ment with Love and the meaning of atonement. This is your realisation of your connection with the state of being that is Oneness and is represented in the story of the flight from Egypt as the land flowing with milk and honey. Reading the story of the Flight from Egypt in this way places the responsibility on you to leave the slavery of your identity with the separate sense of self and cross the threshold into a free land. This is not the work of someone else. You cannot give this responsibility – which is a soul responsibility – to your preacher, your guru, your life coach or any other person. They can guide you but be sure that they do not control you.
In the Irish folk tale about the Tuatha de Danaan – the shining ones the same is true. The shining ones who are also called the beautiful people are you as potential. Ireland, in the story of the Tuatha de Danaan is not a land set somewhere between Britain and the USA. Ireland represents the experience of sovereignty. Sovereignty meaning wholeness. The King or Queen is you. The King or Queen metaphor is the invitation to the realisation of the true self. In biblical terms this is the realisation of what is called Christ consciousness (7th chakra level of awareness). The stone metaphorically speaking is the armoured heart. It is the heart that has turned to stone. Within this heart of stone is the wisdom voice that speaks your name. This is your true name. It is not the name you where given in words after you were born but your name which is that unique vibration given to you from all of creation. This is your unique good vibration.
When you are ready you can listen to the voice in the stone. Sometimes it screams. Sometimes there is turmoil in your life. You loose your job, you become seriously ill, you get divorced or you have someone close to you die. The voice in the stone is screaming and asking you to become the integral sovereign ruler of your life in service to the chosen people. These are the disparate and desperate aspects of your psyche that you have enslaved in the dark of your unconscious mind. This is not an easy choice. The way is, however, known by that unique wisdom voice within you. It might begin simply as the image of a beautiful yellow flower caught in the mind between sleeping and dreaming. The beginning of the journey out of slavery begins by paying attention and trusting how this flowering will move through you.
Make it real by writing about the experience. Write no matter how long or short you make it. This is journaling. This is a spiritual practice that connects head and heart via the hand. Don’t worry that you are not a writer. Just write and in this way you demonstrate to the King or Queen within you that you are ready to claim the sovereign life you are here to live. Be very discriminating about who you share any of your insights with. There are plenty of Pharaohs’ out there who want to keep you enslaved to their personal idea of what spiritual stories should tell you. It is in their interest to keep you in the dark. If any of the above sparks some sense of delight in you then follow that feeling. Trust it and leave the slavery of ego desire for the true desire of your heart which is to live in the knowing of Love.
Be discriminating in your use of the Law of Attraction should you be attracted to use it. Many of its adherents are inviting you to stay in a more comfortable kind of slavery. If you are a sincere spiritual seeker then be discriminating in your use of this wonderful power of co-creation. Ask yourself if your true intention is to use this Law in serving Love’s purpose. If you are honest and humble then you can follow the promptings of that which is truly attractive within you. If not then understand that using the Law of Attraction for manifesting material trinkets has karmic consequences. This is not a punishment but the way in which the soul refuses to allow you to miss its most beautiful and life affirming invitation to what is wild and precious within you.
I hope that you will begin to look at the stories of myth and the stories in religious texts in a more poetic and heart conscious way. Always remember that these old stories are not just about the time they were written in but were written for all time and are written primarily as an invitation to the timeless. If you find that any one who you give your authority to in matters of spirituality debunks this kind of invitation to the wisdom voice within you or in any way makes you feel bad about your personal journey into Love then I suggest you look elsewhere.

Poetry Therapy – Finding Inner Peace
And I shall have some peace there
for peace comes droppings slow
From The Lake Isle of Innisfree
W. B Yeats
The above are some of the beautiful lines from the poem by W. B. Yeats – The Lake Isle of Innisfree. This is the invitation to the Isle of Freedom beyond opposites – the heart isle – the Deep Hearts Core island. I use poetry as a form of therapy. It is a practice of heart awareness where through this practice I build on my imagined island of freedom my heart house. This is an inner island. It is a sanctuary where I go and take solitude and solace from the pain and suffering of the world.
Therapy derives from the root of a Greek word meaning “healing,” which in turn is allied to the experience of wholeness. This is a wider idea than psycho analysis which is a form of therapy with its intention of healing. However, many therapies are a form of adjustment to what can be considered the collective norm of feeling separate within the world of time and space and form. Finding inner peace is the peace that comes dropping slow. It is a journey into the sanctuary of the Still Point Centre. It isn’t something that you acquire but it is more that you allow it to arise through the exercise of trust. The greatest practice of the peace that come dropping slow is any form of meditation. This is a daily practice of focusing the mind so that beyond the riotous thoughts that fill the average mind one finds beyond that real peace of mind.

Peace of mind can be had in an instant if you understand fully your relationship too the peace that passeth understanding and time. For most of us, including myself, this peace comes more slowly. It drops from the higher chakras into the heart centre and radiates through the chakras of the personality. The experience of peace of mind begins as all forms of spiritual practice begin or any other form of learning begins. If you went to learn a foreign language from someone who could not speak such language then your degree of faith in the teacher would be nil. You have to begin with trusting in the possibility that peace of mind is a living and lovely experience that you are able to reveal to yourself.
Peace of mind begins with small steps and it begins in the mind and is connected to the breath. The fineness of your breathing dictates how fine you will feel. At times, with practice, your breath will feel so fine that you enter the Still Point Centre within and you feel expanded beyond the normal limitation of your time space form. Meditation techniques teach you a paradoxical no thing. Whatever practice you engage with you are going to meet with the content of your mind. Most people will find this almost impossible. They are asked to focus within the meditation technique on some chosen object and within a minute or less their mind is simply distracted by distraction.
What then happens is that many people make the judgement that they are not good at the practice and give up. Finding that you are not good at the practice of focusing your mind is the point. The practice isn’t about achievement. It is simply about observation. In meditation terms this is called mindfulness. You are practicing the art of being present to what is and what is happens to be the detraction of you mind. Rather than control this distraction you simply observe it and in observing it the mind quietens.
There are scientifically proved benefits to meditation that cover the whole spectrum of improved physical, mental and emotional health. The important thing is not the results but the practice itself (although the results are not to be dismissed as unimportant). The practice, whichever practice you engage with, will unfold in its own way. The benefits might not come immediately. You will learn to simply not get overly attached to trying to determine how this practice of mediation unfolds.
Peace of mind comes dropping slow because we are so used to having the opposite. When you begin to practice any form of mediation the first thing you observe is how non-peaceful your mind actually is. You think you are in control of your thought processes. If you think this then simply sit still for ten minutes breathing in and out while observing the breath and without changing the way it moves. This will show you how much control of your thoughts you really have. This will begin to show you what peace of mind is not.
The idea is not one of control but one of attention. You don’t try and stop your thinking, which would be a kind of subtle violence. You simply notice. This is a feminine energetic. You are not trying to get somewhere or achieve anything. You are not even trying to achieve peace of mind because the peace of mind that comes dropping slow is negated by the one who thinks they are separate from this peace – namely you. The technique of mediation goes against much of what you have been taught will bring you success and prosperity in life. Meditation is an antidote to the stress of modern living and can, if your are committed enough, reveal to your the purpose, the passion and the true prosperity of your unique connection with this body living in the time and space dimension.
Meditation asks you to trust the process of allowing yourself to be guided from within. This is contrary to the modern focus where everyone tends to be some kind of expert and they know more than you know. This is a fact in many cases but it is only a fact in relation to what can be called cerebral knowledge. It is not factual within the context of what this writer and storyteller calls knowing. Another word for knowing is insight. You get to know from the insider. You don’t acquire this knowing through cerebral learning. You don’t acquire this knowing by steps. It is a revelation of the wisdom mind within you. This is the wisdom mind that you are always a part off but never apart from.
It is a personal experience of this writer that this knowing that you are a part of the Universal mind but never apart from that Universal mind that brings you true peace of mind. This knowing is not the wisdom of another. It is the still small vice within you that speaks to you in unique ways and that you choose to commit to knowing by paying attention. Peace of mind as a journey is called The Hero’s Journey. When you undertake this journey you benefit, not only yourself, but the collective called humanity. When you are so committed the Universe begins to become a more friendly place. The peace of your mind begins to be reflected back to you from the outer world. It is both and inner and outer journey but the primary work is on the alignment with the inner.
Peace of mind is a real boon. It is a true wish fulfilment. It gives life a firm centre. This is the real place of sanctuary where you can retreat too and drink from the well of being. You are truly free to live the unique life of meaning you are here to share with the world. Life isn’t just a period of existence between a timeline called life and death. It becomes the knowing of your birthless/deathless Self. This knowing of your eternal dimension is really the peace that passeth understanding. It gives you what the outer world can never give you because everything in this world of form is impermanent. It comes and it goes. Peace of mind is the knowing of that which is beyond form and which you are a part off but never ever apart from.
Peace of mind is not attained through having the big house, the expensive car or the perfect relationship. Ultimately it is the living and knowing the question “Who am I?” or “What am I here for and what does it all mean?” When you follow the Deep Hearts Core to the island of freedom to express the unique creative aspect of yourself in service to Love’s purpose you have the potential for true peace of mind. This isn’t something you get by wishing it would be so. That is simply a flight of fantasy. You have to do the work. This is the work of making yourself available to the process and trusting that you will be guided to that island, that place of sanctuary where peace comes dropping slow.
You have to make a focused daily commitment to healing. This doesn’t mean you are sick. The primary haling that is required is the healing of the idea that you are simply a body in form living in a dimension called time and space. Of course you are that but that is not the whole of who you are. Living a life between a start time called birth and an end time called death is what most people believe and live from. They might hope for something beyond but that doesn’t mean that they know. This idea of the limited self is the primary cause of suffering in this wold and will not bring you true peace of mind that lasts.
Finding peace of mind takes time, commitment, discipline and practice. It is not a short quick fix solution to the existential question of living life as a separate individual. Finding peace of mind does not end. It just expands. It expands until it envelopes all dimensions within time and beyond time and then begins the game all over again in the endless becoming of Love.
This endless becoming of Love is the great contribution that you can make to the world. You can follow the invitation from St. Francis of Assisi and learn to become an instrument of peace. Why not become one who goes to the inner place of sanctuary where peace comes dropping slow but where slow also means sure. This commitment begins with taking a step into trusting that you have this potential within you and that you, with willingness and with deep intention become a servant to the purpose of Love for the peace of all.
The other asp
ect of real peace of mind is that your begin to radiate it out into the world. Are you Ready to Radiate? You begin to create conditions for the experience of Heaven on Earth which is the intention of the birthing of Creation in each and every moment. This brings you in line with life’s purpose and this purpose gives you peace because it heals the idea of you as being apart from the whole and that which is holy.
I invite you to take up a regular meditation or mindfulness practice. Make this practice, not only one you commit to as a process for finding peace of mind for yourself, but for inviting the peace beyond opposites to become a living experience for all sentient being on this planet and beyond. If you doubt this is possible then simply witness the doubt. In this way you do not give the doubt energy. In simply witnessing it it fades and the peace that comes dropping slow begins to be a peace that becomes, not so much a state of mind, but a station of being.
So begin a new therapy. Poetry therapy. Follow the invitation from W. B. Yeats. Arise and go now. Arise with the willing intention of going forward in life and creating an inner sanctuary of peace for yourself. Out of this peace you will come to find your Deep Hearts Core desire and from this your mind will be at peace, your body will blaze and you will be blessed and feel that you can bless. This will be enough.

Song of the Wandering Aengus
I went out to the hazel wood,
- Because a fire was in my head,
- And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
- And hooked a berry to a thread;
- And when white moths were on the wing,
- And moth-like stars were flickering out,
- I dropped the berry in a stream
- And caught a little silver trout.
- When I had laid it on the floor
- I went to blow the fire a-flame,
- But something rustled on the floor,
- And some one called me by my name:
- It had become a glimmering girl
- With apple blossom in her hair
- Who called me by my name and ran
- And faded through the brightening air.
- Though I am old with wandering
- Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
- I will find out where she has gone,
- And kiss her lips and take her hands;
- And walk among long dappled grass,
- And pluck till time and times are done
- The silver apples of the moon,
- The golden apples of the sun.

Chakra Balancing, Poetry and the Power of Storytelling
When your energy is in free flow you feel fine. This is the movement of refined energy with the body. The energy is moving through the centres of the body called the chakras without these centres being blocked. You feel balanced, you feel creative, you feel the movement of the wild and precious life within. In my workshop entitled “Living the Wild and Precious Life” I use a combination of storytelling, poetry, song and spiritual practices to the bring energy of the individuals and the group into alignment. It is an invitation to the opening of the creative imagination and is intended to allow you to experience the feeling of expansion that comes from the awareness of the creative Self that flows from the practice of chakra balancing.
There are many folk tales and fairy tales that invite the technique of chakra balancing and for healing and making whole that which you feel is desperate within you (2nd chakra experience). I invite you to have fun with finding a story,or a poem, or a song that has meaning for you and start a practice whereby you begin a dialogue with this story, poem, song or other invitation that arises. Begin to make this a spiritual practice. In some traditions it is similar to the spiritual practice called Lecto Divinia. This is usually practiced with scripture. This is the beginning of the real Law of Attraction within you because, if you are being drawn to such lines without your having to force the matter, then there is already an alignment within your energy field..
This invitation is not a cerebral invitation meaning that it is not simply coming from your head. You are not being asked to become a poet, a storyteller, a singer songwriter or any form of artist. You are being invited into what you used to know and live from. This is your childlike imagination. I use the Way of the Chakra’s as a framework. I do this because this framework excites my imagination. It isn’t simply an Eastern framework but a human framework. It is a pathway, a map to the full realisation of your potential.
The starting pint for this path of individualisation is the root chakra. The root chakra is a symbol for your everyday living in this dimension of time and space and form. It is a given. If you are living in a body on this planet then you are living from the root chakra experience. In the process of individualisation I will be referring to what each chakra symbolises within the process of human development and beyond. This is a process that is in alignment with your development. The chakra framework does not only apply to the individual. It can and does apply to nations and even to historical times. Everyone in their personal development and beyond begins with the root chakra. It is your conscious day to day living and all that is unconscious in you is asleep. All the potential you are here to live has yet to be awakened within you.
To become individual, to live the uniqueness that you are, means leaving the security of the family, the connection to limited ideas of separateness evidenced by the nation state and culture. None of these are to be considered bad in a moral sense. They are simply too limited an experience for the longing of your soul. You can love your family, your nation and your culture but to move beyond the root chakra your experience of yourself has to expand beyond this limited time, space and form identity. You have to move from what is simply conscious within you to alignment with the unconscious within you. This is the first step in chakra balancing.
What usually happens in most peoples lives is that they stay asleep. It has happened in my own life as you will see later. They stay locked in the tower of cerebral thought (meaning that most of life is lived in the head) and the beauty that is within them sleeps for much, if not all, of their lives. This is the story of the Sleeping Beauty. This is living in the root chakra and is a kind of banal place. It is the place of work, work, work and the place of paying the bills and doing lots of things as a means to an end. It is a place of suffering and injustice. It is characterised in moves such as the Wizard of Oz as being a flatland where everything is grey. In the story of Cinderella and the story of Mother Holle it is the place where you do ashes work.
In poetry it is the place you refuse to leave and you then leave a legacy for the future generation who then have to do the work of individualisation that you refused to do. You refuse to live the one wild and precious life you are here to live and the one wild and precious life that you are here to give. You refuse to follow the promptings of the heart and you do what you often think you are duty bound to do. This is because in the root chakra you tend to be loyal to family and to ideas such as the nation state and the cultural ideas that are surrounded by cultural taboos. Thus as in my own case my heart wanted me to be a teacher of Yoga and I opted to become an accountant instead. This is because the role of the accountant is safer and one that is more readily acceptable. Becoming an accountant didn’t go against the cultural norm of the time, when I lived in Northern Ireland, and where I was assured by those who taught me Christian values that Yoga was the work of the devil.
What happens if you refuse to follow the movement of the energy that begins to awaken in the root chakra and that begins to align with the energy of polarity in the 2nd chakra. Metaphorically speaking you die among the dishes and the glasses, meaning that psychologically and spiritually speaking your life force stagnates amidst all the things you acquire in order to try to give meaning to a life without Love (4th chakra experience).
Sometimes a man stands up during supper
Sometimes a man stands up during supper
and walks outdoors, and keeps on walking,
because of a church that stands somewhere in the East.
And his children say blessings on him as if he were dead.
And another man, who remains inside his own house,
dies there, inside the dishes and in the glasses,
so that his children have to go far out into the world
toward that same church, which he forgot.
Rainer Maria Rilke
translated by Robert Bly
Here is a great poem about someone who refused to move beyond the 1st chakra. Notice that the movement from the root chakra to the 2nd chakra can happen at any time. In the above poem it happens during supper. This I think is also a reference to the Last Supper. The movement in this poem is about the movement away from the ties of family and culture into the place that is unknown. It is somewhere in the East. It is the arising of the energy of the 3rd chakra – the Sun centre. The church referred to is the church made without hands. It does not refer to some building allied to some hierarchical religious organisation.
It is the place of sanctuary – the heart chakra. It is the place of sanctuary that you are able to enter when you balance the energy of the chakra’s. It is what the poet Rumi calls the heart house and it is the cabin that W. B. Yeats builds on his Lake Isle of Innisfree and where he feels the peace of the heart come dropping slow. What happens if you refuse to stand up and find the church in the East. Then the energy of creative potential gets stuck. It not only gets stuck in you but it also gets stuck in the family energetic and then those who are born into the family have to go and find a way of crating a heart house, a way of finding the church in the East that gives their life meaning, gives their life purpose, passion and prosperity.
The language of poetry is not just more information. The language of storytelling is not just entertainment. It’s primary purpose is the invitation to take the journey to the full realisation of what it is to be human. This begins with where you are now. This journey is the journey without end because it expands into infinity which has no beginning or end. Have a listen to some of the deep hearts core podcasts that I have recorded here. These, I hope, will show you the potential within the power of storytelling and poetry to inspire you to balance the chakra’s so that the personality can become available to the higher centres. To use a Christian description of this process
Thy will be done on Earth (1st chakra) as it is in Heaven (7th chakra).
I invite you to have fun exploring the lines of songs, images from movies, the poems, the stories that have given you times of joy and even sorrow. These are filled with images that attract you in some meaningful way. They are filled with symbols which are deep signs along the path to living your wild and precious life. Invest in a Journal that you create as a form of ritual space. Keep this journal private because it is a manifested dialogue with your higher Self that in the words of another poem tells you “Knows you by heart.” Let it be fun. Don’t make it a trial and don’t make it literal which is the death of passion. If you have never written before I list below some recommended books that I have journeyed with. These give you exercises and possibilities to move beyond the limitation of the root chakra.
I recommend writing to begin with. It can become a deep connection between hand and heart. It unites the two hemispheres of the brain. Most of all have fun and don’t force. To come into alignment and to balance the chakra’s means learning to be comfortable with not knowing and learning to trust the unknown. This is the movement from the 1st to the 2nd chakra. Enjoy the adventure and feel free to contact me to share your experience. Maybe one day you can share how you got up at supper and left to find the healing heart house within and how you found the experience of chakra balancing within you.

The Law of Attraction and the Creative Process
An essential part of the creative process is that part which most of us find difficult and thus avoid. It is as if the seasons came together and decided that Winter was a time that was non-productive and so should be faded out. I find this resistance in myself. It takes the practice of attention and familiarity with ones own internal rhythm to become attuned to the cycles of creativity within. Our culture does not support this aspect of the creative process because it sees this time as wasteful.
The ego does not like this time because it wants action. The ego is uncomfortable with not knowing. Not knowing is an affront to its idea of who it is and why it is. Most of us will not readily admit to not knowing. We will hedge around the subject and turn the question to our advantage and answer it in a way we are comfortable with. Have you ever witnessed a politician answer a straight question by saying, “Sorry, but I don’t know the answer to that question.”
To live a wild and precious life you need at least to understand the creative rhythms of your own life and align your will with their movement. The best explanation of the creative process I have come across is that outlined in The Intuitive Way by Penney Peirce. The rhythm of creation is a dance that was once summarised as the do-be-do-be rhythm of life. This was the movement of the masculine with the feminine. It was, and is, the moment of the Shakti Shiva energy. Except that now we primarily focus on a one step dance. This is the dance of the do-do-do. When asked, most people have little understanding of what it means to be. They understand the doing bit which leads to the having of things. This doing and having seems to be the focus for much of what is promoted through the latest craze called The Secret and what is also known as the Law of Attraction.
Let me try and express the way this writer and storyteller views the creative cycle. I will use the map of the chakras for this purpose. The chakra system could be considered a two tier system of creative movement. There are the lower three chakras and the higher three chakras. These are linked through the 4th chakra which is the heart chakra. The heart chakra connects the higher energy centres with the lower energy centres. Higher and lower are not moral judgements but related to the level of vibration. The being phase is the movement from the higher chakras through the heart and into action and expression through the body into form.
Being is expressed through creativity and is creativity in movement. It is what Penney Peirce calls the descent phase of the creative process. In this decent period of the creative process we are filled with inspiration. We are filled with creative ideas. We are filled with guidance from the still small voice within. This is not the movement of the ego but the movement of being. It is the movement of creative expressing uniquely through you. In the descent phase from spirit (being in spirit) you are available to the Source. Out of this availability creation moves through you from the inspired aspect into action. Out of this action manifestation into form then arises. When this cycle, which Penney Peirce calls the do-have cycle is complete, we then return to the phase that appears to us as empty. It is a kind of nowhere place to go. It is a kind of nothing is happening experience. However,
In this part of the creation cycle we can actively rest in peace and recharge. Yet after so much do-have, do-have, do-have, life has become so concrete that few of us remember how to recognise the intangible, let alone how pleasurable emptiness or spaciousness is.
This, for most of us is considered the winter phase of the creative process. It is the prelude to life renewing itself but for many, if not most, it is a cold and empty place to be. However, without winter there would be much less room for new growth. We have to learn a new way of being comfortable and confident in allowing the emptiness that is part of the creative cycle. This is why the practice of meditation is so beneficial. It is in many ways the conscious practice of emptiness. You practice simply allowing while consciously focusing on your chosen object of attention. This might be the flame of a candle or the movement of the breath.
